Avenues of Service
Based on the Object of Rotary, the Four Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical
cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
- Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning
of the club.
- Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations
and to practice high ethical standards.
- Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve
life in its community.
- International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary's humanitarian
reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.

Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset implements these cornerstones on a daily basis. Below
are what we currently are working on and striving to achieve.
Club Service
Our Club Service Committee has been promoting strengthening friendships and health
this year. The Committee started a buddy program where members were divided
into buddy group to learn about each other as individuals and to introduce each other
to the club at one of our meetings. The Committee has also organized hikes and golf tournaments.
Regular fellowship picnics at Fort DeRussy have been very successful events
this year.
Vocational Service
VOCATIONAL SERVICE, THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD AVENUE OF SERVICE - Our founding father
Paul Harris organized Rotary as a group of Chicago businessmen with a service motive.
He felt every member would contribute based on that member's vocational skills. We use our
vocational skills daily in our work or business, at home and whenever we are doing
"Rotary things". Vocational skills can include: accounting/budgeting, fundraising/sales,
communication/motivational, mentoring/coaching, performing/entertaining, building/contracting,
computer, health/medical, leadership/team skills and many others.
My goal as the Vocational Service Director is to better enlighten and motivate our
membership to first identify their vocational skills and then to find ways to use those
skills within our club and community. At our recent fundraiser members used their
vocational skills to plan, budget, organize, motivate, fundraise, sell, collect,
construct, decorate, entertain and network. In the end, we made our goals and our
club and community will be better for it.
Community Service
This year, our Community Service Committee has promoted and encouraged us to donate
blood to the Blood Bank, and other clubs in District 5000 also rose to our challenge
and gave blood as well. We also completely redesigned
and replanted the garden area
at Ronald McDonald House and spruced it up for the grand reopening of the
Ronald McDonald House this March. We helped sell Christmas trees at the Habilitat lot,
helped with the Foster Families annual picnic, took three needy families
Christmas shopping and gave Thanksgiving baskets to needy families at the HUGS House.
International Service
Our International Services Committee has been working with our University of Hawai'i
Rotaractors to establish a Rotaract-led project with Rotarians in the Middle East,
preferably Israel or Palestine. The process of finding the right project in the
right location is slow, but we have made many valuable contacts. This May, Jill,
President of the University of Hawai'i Rotaract Club, and Nimrod Palma, the Treasurer, an Israeli citizen, will be traveling together
to visit "Nimy's" homeland.
Our International Services Chair approached President Liz and President-Elect Samir
and presented the idea that the personal contact may be a way to explore possible
joint action in the future with a Israeli Club. In line with the International President's
emphasis on continuity between club administrations, both the President and President-Elect
gave their approval because any involvement will go into next year, and International Services will authorize
Nimrod to commit up to $1000 in "seed money" with a local Club that our Rotaractors
will visit while in Israel. We believe that the initiative
and good judgment of these Rotaractors will be the best vehicle to identify a worthy
project in that area of the world.
In addition, Sunsetter's keep supporting as well as traveling and participating in
projects like Polio Immunizations, Tsunami relief and rebuilding of Iraq.
